A DREAM TEAM TAKES FLIGHT
In 2013, a team of passionate aviators embarked on a mission: resurrect the North American P-51 Mustang, the world’s most iconic and sought-after warbird for the 21st century. And in doing so, make it affordable to own and operate, so more pilots can realize the dream of flying a Mustang.
Led by Hans Schwoeller and fueled by Christian von Kessel’s entrepreneurial fire, ScaleWings was born. Simon Schell, the technical mastermind, brought aviation expertise and leadership to forge innovation into reality.
From a proof-of-concept in 2013 to its first flight in 2014, their drive to revive the legend of the P-51 as the 72% scale SW-51 was unrelenting. Never before has a Mustang tribute been so faithfully reproduced down to the last rivet. Authenticity without compromise describes both the SW-51 and the mission of ScaleWings.
In Poland’s Aviation Valley, manufacturing alongside giants like Sikorsky and Airbus, ScaleWings has turned a dream into reality.
MODERNIZING
HISTORY
The P-51’s legend wasn’t just speed, it was design perfection. ScaleWings didn’t settle for imitation; they dissected history, embedding over 100,000 details, rivets, screws, pinked tape, into an all-carbon construction. Where others leaned on automotive engines, they chose the turbocharged Rotax 916iS, a 160-hp marvel that fits the scaled down P-51 perfectly. This isn’t a shortcut; it’s a reinvention. Certified parts, switches, wiring, hardware, yet with experimental freedom. The SW-51 reduces the cost of owning and maintaining a Mustang.
COMPUTER-DESIGNED HAND-CRAFTED
Computer models allowed ScaleWings engineers to make improvements to the original design that enhance performance and safety. Even the original laminar-flow airfoil was redesigned to improve low-speed handling.
More than 70 artisans handcraft the SW-51. Their collective obsession for bringing the SW-51 to life is matched only by the attention to detail found in more than 100,000 details – rivets, screws, pinked tape, and section lines – built into the carbon fiber molds to give the SW-51 unrivaled authenticity.
